‘Bottoms Up’ to Get a Facelift

New Producers Want New Blood for Zany New ‘Bottoms Up’

A talent search is on in Vegas for comic actors who can sing and dance as Starr Pro Productions completely revamps the long-running comedy revue, Bottoms Up.

The Auditions are Tuesday, June 17, and Wednesday, June 8 at the Onyx Theatre, 953 E. Sahara Ave. # 16 (inside the Rack clothing store) from noon to 3 pm each day. Producers need four character comedy actors: one plus-size woman who can sing extremely well, one woman no larger than size 9, one good-looking male lead, and another male lead who must be African-American. Auditions for dancers will be announced soon.

Producer Jimmy Emerson has gathered a team of writers in California, Nevada and Texas to update and reinvigorate Breck Wall’s madcap show. Wall, who has been inducted into the Las Vegas Hall of Fame, brought the show to Vegas in 1964 and has been director, producer and star every since, and he wants to be around to bring out the next generation of talent to star in his show.

“I’m really glad to have Jimmy on board for this new version of the show,” he said. “He was in Bottoms Up, and he is one of the funniest people I ever met. Very smart too. I’m extremely excited about what’s he’s done so far. It is going to be fabulous.” Wall and comic genius David Harris will still be in the show, but  Emerson and Wall want to showcase new talent to tackle the show’s fresh, more cutting-edge material.

“Although we love the burlesque quality the show has always had, a lot of our new material has to do with current events and pop culture, along with a few well-placed jabs at our political leaders,” said Emerson. “It’s sort of Saturday Night Live with showgirls and production numbers.”

New material includes a range of skits and songs, such as a spoof on American Idol and a lively country dance number to David Fahl’s “Easy Woman Polka” which is sure to bring the house down. Although the show has been completely rewritten, Emerson and Wall have left room in the script for a couple of Bottoms Up classics that fans of the show will want to see.

The new Bottoms Up will open September 2, 2008, at Northern Quest Casino in Spokane, Washington, for a two-week run. This will be the 10th show that Starr Pro Productions has brought to the Casino. Other Starr Pro Productions at Northern Quest include Norbert Aleman’s An Evening at La Cage, Christopher Peterson’s Eyecons (which is currently touring), and Showstoppers, a glittering salute to Broadway, directed by Kenneth Blake who has been contracted to direct the new Bottoms Up. Also on the production team are associate producer Carrie Proffit and choreographer Jim Lash. Costumes are by Shawn M and Miracle Costume.

Said Emerson, “We have a great team, and we are looking for the stars who will make this a truly great show.”
